STUTTGART, Arkansas – Officials with the Arkansas State Police confirmed Thursday morning that an overnight car chase led to the deadly shooting of Stuttgart police officer Sergeant Donald Scoby.
According to the ASP, two Stuttgart officers were involved in a chase around 11 p.m. Wednesday. Troopers stated that the suspect, 31-year-old Jacob Cole Barnes, stopped the car near Rieger Road and fled.
During the foot pursuit, Barnes is believed to have fired on both officers, resulting in the death of Sergeant Scoby, a 4 year veteran of the department.
Barnes then entered a residence at 593 Rieger Road occupied by a woman who barricaded herself inside the home and was subsequently extricated safely by the Arkansas State Police SWAT team shortly before 7 AM today.
Moments later, Barnes shot a state police SWAT team member who sustained a non-life threatening wound and is being treated at a Little Rock hospital.
