BREAKING: UCR enforcement begins May 1st for all carriers/brokers
The Unified Carrier Registration Act of 2005 (UCR) is back on and enforcement is slated to begin May 1st, 2020 according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration..
The UCR is required for all motor carriers (for-hire, private and exempt) as well as brokers, freight forwarders and leasing companies operating in interstate and international commerce are subject to the UCR Agreement. Carriers based in Canada and Mexico that operate in the United States are also subject to the UCR Agreement.
UCR enforcement for 2020 was delayed after a potential data breach in 2019 where as many as 30,000 carriers and broker’s Employee Identification Numbers might have been breached in March of 2019. It seems as that is resolved and upon publication in the Federal Register all carriers and brokers will need to be compliant by May 1st.
Scammers often exploit new carriers/brokers by sending official looking documents out which to people new to the industry give the appearance that these companies are representing the government. According to a press release by the FMCSA in 2018, several of these companies settled a claim with the Federal Trade Commission. One of these companies, DOTAuthority.com already has a message up on their page to pre-register to pay for the UCR Fees. Once the rulemaking is published in the Federal Register, carriers and brokers will have until May 1st to register. You can register on your own by visiting www.ucr.gov. It is very easy to file on your own.
