
CBP Officers Uncover 614 Pound Meth Load Hidden in Shipment of Green Onions
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay Mesa commercial facility on Sunday discovered 614 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in a shipment of green onions.
The haul was discover around 12:30 p.m. when a 31-year-old Mexican citizen pulling trailer was referred the driver and his truck to an X-ray imaging system for entry into the United States. Officers discovered anomalies within the shipment during the X-ray and sent the driver to an intensive examination. The drug detection dogs alerted to the presence of drugs aboard the shipment.
The load, which was said to contain mint leaves and other spices according to the bill of lading actually contained 612 pounds of methamphetamine with a street value of $1.4 millon.
Customs officers seized the truck and trailer and turned the driver over to Homeland Security Investigations for further processing.
