(Note this is a video I shot several months ago, but several people have been asking for it again, so I figured I would refresh the post and add it to the new Freight 101 section)
Becoming a freight agent, broker or dispatcher from home is one of the best opportunities to build your business while maintaining comfortable office, after all you are working from home right? You have the freedom to make your own hours, work as much or as little as you want and you can essentially wake up, roll out of bed and BOOM you are in the office. In this article I am going to talk about some of the tech you need to build the perfect home office.
Probably the most important part of building a home office is figuring out what room you are going to devote for work. You need a secluded space away from any distractions you might have Including noise, children, in my case the kitchen and did I mention children? Utilizing a complete spare bedroom and converting it to a full office is one of the best ways to assure adequate space and seclusion, in addition to a nice tax write office for a home based business.
I personally wanted a very specific setup for my desk and I chose the Alera desk shell found here. I purchased two of these desks to form an L to hold all the computer equipment. I find they are literally the best desk for the money at around $150 each.
The next, and possibly the best item I purchased was a dual monitor stand, found here and two Curved 24″ Samsung Monitors, here. Having multiple monitors is very important as it allows you to keep an eye on EVERYTHING at once, such as load-boards, emails, maps for routing and more. I personally tend to run the DAT loadboard on one screen and typically split up the other screen with Outlook, my Phone system, and Google Hangouts to chat with my staff. I chose the Lenovo IdeaCentre desktop as it is a very fair-priced computer with enough computing power to never lag out when I needed it most.
For the phone system, I chose the Polycom VVX 350, Found here, as it integrates perfectly with the BEST VOIP PHONE SYSTEM EVER, Ringcentral. I have found that this phone is top of the line with awesome sound, and easily integrates with RC. Ringcentral is by far, the best VOIP phone system for your home or commercial office. It has too many features to list, but you can shoot me a message and I can hook you up with a mean discount. I recently started using a wireless headset called the Jabra Pro and this folks was a game changer for me. Paired with the auto pickup this is awesome. Think of a bluetooth earpiece on steroids. It has the range of nearly a football field, allows you to hook up both your computer and your VVX for the clearest phone conversations. It is the very same headset I use in all of my videos, so check it out!
If you have dreams of working beach side, booking freight from your laptop while you sip a Margarita (which is entirely possible) I recommend the Acer Nitro 5, which is a very powerful laptop with a large screen and an HDMI output for when you are at home and need to run a second monitor.
Lastly, I recommend the Brother MFC 5800 as the printer of choice. It is the heavy hitter of home office printers. It scans, prints and copies at a very fast pace, and I personally feel Brother’s Control Center printing software has some of the best OCR capabilities of all printers. Whatever equipment you choose, I wish you the best in your freight endeavors. I have found that the money was well spent for all of these items as I feel having top of the line equipment helped me to handle increased freight volumes.
Of course, now that you have the office set up, the next thing to do is to get signed up with DAT, Truckstop
