Kevin McCarthy, all he does is lose, lose, lose and lose again
UPDATE: On Thursday, Kevin McCarthy lost his seventh and eighth votes so far.
Despite ongoing negotiations, his detractors do not seem to be budging.
During the seventh vote, Rep. Matt Gaetz voted for Donald Trump to become Speaker of the House.
UPDATE: Kevin McCarthy has now lost for a 6th time.
WASHINGTON D.C. – Congressman Kevin McCarthy has now lost his 4th round of voting in his attempt to become speaker of the house, and there does not seem to be any budging for those that are voting against him.
The new Republican majority in the U.S. House rejected House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s bid to become House Speaker on Jan. 3, and voting resumed on Wednesday with very little change in the outcome despite two rounds of voting thus far.
McCarthy’s losses come despite the endorsement of President Donald Trump, who even issued a last-minute warning on Truth Social imploring Republicans not to let a “great triumph” turn into an “embarrassing defeat” by failing to vote McCarthy speaker.
The latest vote saw a core group of 20 GOP holdouts nominate and vote for Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, a sophomore Republican lawmaker who on Tuesday had publicly shifted his support away from McCarthy.
A sixth round of voting will be needed.
