Madison Cawthorn, a 25-year-old is predicted to beat Democrat Moe Davis for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District, once held by White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. Cawthorn, who is new to the political arena, is a conservative who made a shockwave with a primary victory over a candidate backed by President Donald Trump.
In a tweet, Cawthorn thanked his supporters, writing, “From the bottom of my heart, Thank you.
All glory goes to God and I am excited to serve each and every member of this district. Thank you!
Cawthorn cited Ocasio-Cortez in his decision to run for office. He wrote on his website that he ran for office because “our faith, our freedoms and our values are under assault from coastal elites and leftists like (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.”
Cawthorn had been planning to serve his country in the Navy. With an appointment to the Naval academy in Annapolis, his future was in serving America. However, when he was 19, that all changed when he was in a car accident outside of Daytona, Florida. Cawthron fought for his life for months in ICU and was partially paralyzed.
Cawthron credits his faith and that of his family’s faith to his recovery.
New York Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez was previously the youngest elected member in modern history at 29 years, 2 months and 22 days in 2018.
Before this election, the youngest House member ever elected was William Charles Cole Claiborne of Tennessee, elected in 1797 at age 22. According to US House records, he was seated despite not meeting the constitutional age requirement of 25 for the House.
