A man was arrested after climbing under semi-truck hauling wine and attempting to drink directly from the valve while the truck was traveling down the highway.
According to California Highway Patrol, a tanker operated by Cherokee Freight Lines was hauling bulk red wine through Modesto, California when the driver noticed a car, reportedly driven by 39-year old Gabriel Moreno with it’s hazard lights on motioning for the truck driver to pull over. When the trucker pulled over, Moreno reportedly exited his vehicle, wearing nothing other then a pair of underwear and ran directly to the back of the truck.
The trucker pulled back on to the freeway, and approached highway speeds when he noticed that he was loosing wine via a gauge in the truck, pulled over and called the highway patrol. While the trucker was traveling down the highway, Moreno reportedly climbed under the truck, released the drain valve and attempted to drink as much as he could as the truck sped down the highway.
“I’ve listened to radio. I’ve listened to thousands and thousands of calls. This one’s up there in the top 10,” said Officer Tom Olsen with the Modesto CHP. “This individual was able to release the wine from under the tanker, and he placed himself underneath the tanker in such a manner – the best way to describe this was somebody doing snow angels.”
What makes this unbelievable crime believable is the fact that the trucker caught the whole event via an onboard camera system. Local news CBS Sacramento posted the news story with video on YouTube.
What is even crazier, appears Moreno was arrested just one day later by the Stanislaus Country Sheriffs Office for attempting to steal a landscaping truck just moments after being released. Apparently, due to an emergency mandate stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, Moreno was released with zero bail after the wine incident and was reportedly mad that he was not given a sandwich when he was released and decided he would be rearrested. He got his wish.
