MIAMI, Florida – A Miami-Dade Robbery Intervention Detail police officer is fighting for his life after being shot in the head after an exchange of gunfire with a suspect after Miami-Dade RID detectives approached a vehicle believed to have been involved in an armed robbery.
In an early Tuesday morning update, officials said the officer was in “very, very critical condition.”
The suspect who opened fire was shot and killed by police, authorities confirmed.
Police said the MDPD officers were called to the area of Northwest 17th Avenue and 67th Street to assist in the Liberty City neighborhood around 8:15 p.m.
Police said that’s where Miami-Dade RID detectives found a vehicle believed to have been involved in an armed robbery.
Police said the suspect took off from the scene in a car and was then involved in a head-on crash. A child and an adult were in the other car. They were not injured.
The suspect then opened fire on the officers, striking the MDPD officer in the head. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect.
According to WSVN, an upset officer was seen slamming the hood of his car outside of Jackson Memorial Hospital. Several other police cruisers were seen outside the medical center.
The officer was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.
“We’re here in solidarity, waiting patiently,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said overnight at a press conference. “The officer is in critical condition and all we can do now is wait and pray and be together. So we ask all of you to join us in prayers, in support for the family and for the entire law enforcement community that is on vigil, is on standby during this difficult time.”
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
