Portland adds another mass shooting to their statistics
PORTLAND, Oregon – Portland local hospitals began receiving walk-in gunshot victims early Monday morning. Those victims were later tied to a shooting scene that had no victims present when police responded.
Portland police say that just after midnight, North Precinct officers responded to the reports of a shooting in the 6300 Block of North Marine Drive. Additional calls to police described a street racing event that turned into a shooting.
Once at the location, officers found evidence that a large number of shots had been fired. However, they were unable to locate any victims. Officers blocked off the scene and began interviewing witnesses and processing the area for evidence. Police collected almost 100 bullet casings.
“As officers started processing the scene, local hospitals began reporting “walk-in” gunshot victims. In total, a 21-year-old male, an 18-year-old female, a 16-year-old juvenile male, and an 11-year-old juvenile male arrived at local emergency rooms. It is unclear at this time if the 11-year-old was hit by gunfire or if his wound was caused by shrapnel. The other three were treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds,” the police stated in a press release.
Police identified Adrian Dangelo Ramirez, 21, as a shooter. Ramirez was treated for his gunshot wound and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on the charges of Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Assault in the First Degree, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.
Portland police say that the investigation is ongoing and may be additional suspects or victims.
“Portland is again seeing large numbers of individuals attending these street racing events, and the Portland Police Bureau would like to remind the public that street racing is not only illegal, but they are often dangerous, as illustrated by this incident. Officers were made aware of children as young as 5-months-old being in attendance this morning,” Portland police stated in a press release.
The City of Portland saw a decline in this activity due to targeted efforts by the Portland Police Bureau last Fall, but this event is an indicator that there are many who are organizing to start engaging in this illicit and dangerous behavior again, as evidenced by the several hundred people who were in attendance last night.
“Street racing is not only illegal, can turn into a dangerous crowd event, drawing not only participants but spectators,” said Chief Chuck Lovell. “We are fortunate that no one was more seriously injured or killed over the weekend. Unfortunately, these take considerable resources to address and can be hazardous for not just those involved, but innocent road users who often are affected. As a city, we must work together to hold those committing these illegal street takeovers accountable.”
So far this year, Portland has seen 371 confirmed shootings, in which 106 people were injured. There have been 23 homicides, 22 by shooting.
