Teacher injured in shooting at Virginia elementary school, suspect in custody

NEW PORT NEWS, Virginia – A teacher was injured in a shooting at an elementary school in Virginia on Friday, police and school officials said.

No students were injured in the shooting, which occurred at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, police said.

The adult was transported to a local hospital. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time, police said.

There are unconfirmed reports that the suspect in custody may be a student at the school.

New Port News Public Schools put out a statement on social media confirming that there was a shooting and that the person responsible is in custody.

NPNPS added that “Parent and student reunification is taking place at the Richneck gym door. Parents and guardians must present a picture ID to pick up their child.”
