Changing your sex from male to female does not change your duty to your country. According to the United States Selective Service, transgender women are required to register for the draft.
The question of whether or not transgender women would be required to register for the draft was kicked off by a Tweeet from Representative Lauren Boebart.
“Trans women (also known as men) will be forced to sign up for the draft. Looks like Joe Biden has just officially confirmed what a woman is and what a woman isn’t,” She wrote, and the debate immediately started, but according to the U.S. Selective Service, Boebart is correct.
“Almost all male US citizens and male immigrants, who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service. It’s important to know that even though he is registered, a man will not automatically be inducted into the military. In a crisis requiring a draft, men would be called in a sequence determined by random lottery number and year of birth. Then, they would be examined for mental, physical, and moral fitness by the military before being deferred or exempted from military service or inducted into the Armed Forces,” the Selective Service states.
US citizens or immigrants who are born male and changed their gender to female are still required to register. Individuals who are born female and changed their gender to male are not required to register.
