Trucker caught smuggling a history making quantity of marijuana released without charges
A few weeks ago we wrote about a 26-year old truck driver from India, residing in Canada who attempted to cross into the United States via the Peace Bridge in Buffalo with a record setting 9,472 lbs. of marijuana. Well in a weird turn of events, the drug charges have been dropped, and the case dismissed…..for now.
On June 25th, the trucker, a citizen of India and a Canadian Permanent Resident attempted to cross the Peace Bridge Cargo Facility on June 25th when the truck was pulled in for a secondary inspection. The driver presented shipping documents which stated the trailer contained 55 wooden storage containers. During a non-intrusive inspection scan, CBP officers noticed anomalies withing the storage containers. Upon further inspection, officers discovered each bin contained vacuum sealed packages of marijuana.
In total, officers seized 9,472 pounds of marijuana worth more than $20 million dollars in estimated street value. This is the largest narcotics seizure recorded on the northern border, breaking the record set only one week previous where a driver was caught with 3,600 lbs of marijuana and ranks 23rd in the United States, for a period covering the last 5-years.
Earlier this week something happened. The trucker was released without any charges. The United States Attorney James P. Kennedy issued the following statement regarding the release of Prabjot Nagra:
“The charges were dismissed without prejudice in order to allow the government additional time to conduct a full forensic examination of certain electronic evidence recovered during the seizure and to permit additional steps to be taken in this ongoing transnational investigation. It is expected that suck further investigative efforts will shed additional light not only on Mr. Nagra’s knowledge regarding the contents of the sealer trailer he was hauling but also on the source and destination of the tons of marijuana it contained.”
