A trucker is in hot water after flashing a gun at a fellow trucker at a Love’s Travel Center in Ocala, Florida.
According to police, the 62-year-old driver, Robert Allen Lawson of Lansing, Michigan was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill on Wednesday, June 10th after an argument with another trucker.
The victim told police that he was backing into a parking spot at the Love’s located at 7791 NW 47th Avenue., when Lawson reportedly laid on his air-horn. The driver reportedly walked to Lawson’s truck after parking to ask what all the noise was about. According to police, Lawson reportedly told the driver he did not use his horn and the driver returned to his truck.
At this point, the victim saw a male witness get out of the passenger side of Lawson’s truck, briefly enter the cab of another truck parked next to Lawson, and then returning to Lawson’s truck. According to the victim, Lawson then exited his truck, and the victim approached him thinking that Lawson was planning to apologize. As the two closed the gap, Lawson reportedly pointed towards his hip, where he had a firearm holstered in plain view. The victim told police that Lawson told the victim “I will shoot your ass” causing the victim to return to his truck.
The victim called the police and reported the incident. During the call, the Lawson returned to his truck. The witness again exited Lawson’s truck, disappearing into the truck parked next to Lawson’s for a short time, then again, returned to Lawson’s truck.
When police arrived, Lawson denied having been in possession of a firearm. The police then asked the witness for permission to search his truck for the firearm based on the victims statements. The witness gave the police officers permission to search his truck, where police located a black SCCYSPX-1 9mm handgun concealed under a television, a black nylon holster in an open cabinet above the TV, and one magazine containing seven 9mm rounds in a baby wipes container, according to the report.
Lawson then came clean to the police officers telling the police that after the initial argument with the victim, the witness gave Lawson the firearm. Lawson says that he did walk up to the victim to apologize but said he never threatened the victim. Lawson told police he gave the gun back to the witness.
Another separate trucker who witnessed the incident said he saw Lawson approach the victim in the parking lot and while he did not see the weapon he confirmed the victim’s story saying that Lawson was pointing to his hip and was red in the face.
Lawson was arrested, and has since posted bail. The witness who reportedly gave Lawson the gun, hid the gun and then lied to police about the weapon being in his truck does not appear to have been charged with anything.
