In a tragic incident on Friday afternoon Stanley, Virginia police officer Dominic “Nick” J. Winum was fatally shot while attempting a traffic stop.
Officer Winum had attempted a traffic stop when the subject of the stop opened fire on Officer Winum before he could even leave his patrol vehicle. Officer Winum was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a tweet late Friday evening, the Virginia State Police shared their condolences along with a statement from Police Chief Ryan Dean:
As for the shooter, Police Chief Dean said that, “Thanks to the immediate response of his fellow Stanley Police Officers and the Luray Police Department, Page County Sheriff’s Office, and the Virginia State police, the suspect shooter was tracked to and taken into custody in a field off Marksville Road. There is no additional threat to the community this evening.”
Officer Winum had graduated from the Virginia State Police 112th Basic Session in 2006, and served as a trooper with them until 2016. He had served the town of Stanley since 2016.
